Preparing for Winter: Inside Our Warmth Initiative

For most of us, winter means cozy evenings indoors. But for thousands of vulnerable people across Canada, the colder months bring genuine danger. Freezing temperatures, inadequate shelter, and a lack of warm clothing can turn winter into a life-threatening season. Our Winter Warmth Initiative was created to meet this urgent need — and it depends on the support of people like you.

A Season of Real Risk

Canadian winters are among the harshest in the world. For individuals experiencing homelessness, families struggling to afford heating, and isolated seniors, the drop in temperature is not a minor inconvenience — it is a serious threat to health and safety. Exposure to extreme cold can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and worse.

The Winter Warmth Initiative exists to ensure that no one in our reach has to face these dangers without support. It is one of our most time-sensitive programs, because when the cold arrives, help cannot wait.

What the Initiative Provides

Each year, our Winter Warmth Initiative mobilises resources to deliver essential cold-weather support to those who need it most. This includes:

  • Warm clothing — coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and thermal layers.
  • Blankets and bedding — to provide warmth for those sleeping rough or in inadequate housing.
  • Heating support — assistance that helps vulnerable households keep their homes safe and warm.

These items are distributed through our network of local partners and volunteers, ensuring they reach individuals and families directly and efficiently.

Where Your Support Goes Furthest

Not all donations are equal in their impact, and during winter, certain items make a particularly significant difference. New or gently used winter coats, thermal blankets, and waterproof outerwear are always in high demand. Financial contributions are especially valuable, as they allow us to purchase exactly what is needed, in the right sizes and quantities, and to respond quickly as conditions change.

By focusing resources where they matter most, we ensure that every contribution translates into real, measurable warmth for someone facing the cold.

How the Drive Works

The Winter Warmth Initiative runs as a coordinated, community-driven effort. Donations are collected through designated drop-off points, partner locations, and organised collection drives. Volunteers then sort, pack, and distribute the items to those identified as most in need through our outreach and partner networks.

This structured approach ensures transparency and accountability at every stage — from the moment an item is donated to the moment it provides comfort to someone in need.

How You Can Get Involved

There are several meaningful ways to contribute to this initiative:

  • Donate items — drop off warm clothing, blankets, and winter essentials at a collection point.
  • Give financially — fund the purchase of high-demand items where they’re needed most.
  • Organise a collection — rally your workplace, school, or community to gather supplies.
  • Volunteer — help sort, pack, and distribute donations during the busy winter season.
  • Spread the word — share the initiative with others who may want to help.

Warmth Is a Community Effort

No single donation can solve the challenges of winter alone — but together, our collective generosity creates a powerful safety net. Every coat, blanket, and contribution is a reminder that no one in our community has to face the cold without support.

As the temperature drops, your help can be the difference between hardship and warmth for someone in need.
